Drag show brings relief

January 18, 2005 Edition 1

The world has mobilised to help those left destitute by the destructive forces of mother nature after the recent tsunami, which caused havoc in South-East Asia.

Durbanites, touched by the images which brought home the reality of the devastation, have contributed thousands of rands to funds that will see the lives of millions greatly improved.

The theatre has been the only good and constant source of entertainment lately, so when the opportunity came to attend a show that would feature men dressed as women, I jumped at it.

When I first entered the venue, the intimate Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo, my hopes for the show were high, and it did not disappoint. I have not had the pleasure of seeing a live drag show before, but television and the movies have provided me with a little insight into the time and effort that goes into the make-up, the clothes and, of course, the performances.

Dressed in some of the most innovative and not-so-stylish outfits, The Family Players and Belinda Dolphin put on a show to remember, sending members of the audience back in time with songs from yesteryear.

The show was hilariously funny and had me singing songs I had thought had been buried deeply in a time capsule.

It was pure good fun, with the audience joining in on a few songs, which made the evening laid back and relaxed.

The drinks were flowing and the company I had kept me in stitches.

A good show for a great cause. It was wonderful to see Durbanites dig into their pockets to help those less fortunate.
