The songs made
famous by 10-time Grammy Award winner Barbra Streisand and the sensational
voice of Mariette Heenop
come together in Barbra: The Audacity To Do Streisand.
Featuring close on 20 Streisand classics and the accompaniment of renowned
Durban jazz pianist, Melvin Peters, this brand new show takes us on a
remarkable journey in the history of the international music industry, a
journey that saw Streisand being installed as the most successful female
recording artist of all time. With 47 gold albums, Streisand is second in the
all-time charts, ahead of The Beatles and The Rolling
Stones, exceeded only by Elvis. Thus, she is the only artist among the top four
all-time gold record sellers who was not part of the Rock & Roll
revolution, which has dominated the record business for four decades. Never
before in South Africa has anyone had the nerve to try and emulate “The Voice”
– who “can do anything, from clowning like Fanny Brice to wailing like the
great gospel singer Mahalia Jackson, from tintinnabulating with the clarity of a choirboy to
smouldering camply in the Mae West manner.” With Mariette Heenop,
all that’s about to change.
