In 2006, “The Family Players” celebrate 25+1 years in “show
business”.
Twenty-six years, as we had
too many commitments in 2005, but here we are!
Early in 1980 four friends got together to provide some light
entertainment at an old age home. They
borrowed clothes, make up and recorded their music on cassette, then hit the
stage! The early shows were free, later
progressing to paying shows to raise funds for the various institutions and
projects. From these simple beginnings the amateur group “The Family Players”
was born. Since then the group has
performed many shows at MOTHWA Havens, Bill Buchanan Home, TAFTA Lodge and
numerous other seniors’ homes and venues around the city. Costume changes have
been on staircases, kitchens and even in real dressing rooms. Lighting has varied from florescent to
daylight to coloured lights. Costumes
have been borrowed, sewn from oddments or glitzy, glamorous gowns.
The founding four, Derek Pearce, John Cavalheir, David Hierons and
Kevan Mardon are still involved in entertainment in one form or another. Some
people have joined for a few years and then moved on although many still
support our efforts. Some of the former
players are Patrick Dalais, Gavin Smith and Craig Geddes. The present troupe is Greg Baptie, Derek Pearce,
Alan Quie-Hampton, Roland Stansell, Gino Veronie and David Hierons. We look forward to some “younger” blood
joining the group to see us through to the fifty-year celebration…
Guest artistes have included Elaine Jennings, Belinda Dolphin and
Anthony Stonier. In 2001, we were fortunate
to find a home at Rhumbelow Moth Shell Hole in Umbilo (Rhumbelow Theatre), to
continue with fund raising and having fun.
Being professional, but enjoying yourself is what makes it all
worthwhile. So we don the costumes, apply the makeup, put on the heels to
entertain time after time.
We now have Roland running the theatre, the MOTHS running the bar
and property and Pam helping Derek with choreography, Glynnis, Veronica and
Derek sewing and other people helping with set building, wigs, lights, front of
house – the list goes on…. Down the line
we have an equipped theatre, forty – at last count - boxes of professionally
sewn costumes, an array of wigs, headdresses and sets.
Over the years, “The Family Players” has brought joy to many people
and raised funds for worthy causes. At Rhumbelow, this trend has continued with
lots of laughter filling the theatre with many projects benefiting from the
fundraising efforts. Plus we have revamped the venue and busy installing
air-conditioning!
We pay tribute to players who have passed away, Gavin Young in 1996,
Andrew Renaud and Zelma Hierons in 2005 – sorely missed for their acting,
laughter, sewing and most of all their humour and wonderful support, both on
and off the stage. We also pay tribute
to Joyce Grobbelaar, Mardie Mardon and Peggy Stansell who also passed away in
2005. They were staunch supporters who brought laughter, smiles and other
converts to our lovely venue.
To all the people involved since the inception – public especially -
we offer a million thanks to you for your dedication, time and energy in
bringing joy to all, especially our senior citizens.
Go well and keep on smiling!
