Durban theatre-lovers are in for an out-of-the-ordinary treat with the advent next month, of caffe-theatre, when the Actors Co-operative presents WELL I NEVER! at Rhumbelow

WELL I NEVER! stars English-trained Vera Clare, directed and ably supported by Garth Anderson.

Two of the city’s most well-loved and admired performers, Garth and Vera present WELL I NEVER!, a programme of entertaining short stories by three of the world’s best writers, on a beautiful candle-lit stage in one of Durban’s coziest and most romantic theatre venues. The fabulously theatrical event includes comedy from the pens of William Somerset Maugham, French author Guy de Maupassant and Hector Hugh Monro, better-known by the pseudonym Saki. The stylish stories The Luncheon, The Three Fat Women Of Antibes, Playing With Fire and The Lumber Room have been chosen for their light-hearted humour and witty themes, and are perfect to while away an enchanting spring evening. When presented at last year’s Hilton Festival the production sold out completely.

Multi-award winning Vera Clare boasts an illustrious stage career spanning a half a century of comedy and drama, beginning at the age of four when she appeared for the first time playing a little Japanese girl with two chrysanthemums to cover her youthfully prominent ears. Since then, Vera has played all the major roles, from George Bernard Shaw’s SAINT JOAN, the leads in all Chekhov’s plays and in Shakespeare, Moliere, Aristophanes, Strindberg and Wilde, and in numerous Restoration comedies, as well as in 20th Century works by John Osborn, Arnold Wesker and Noel Coward. Well deserved winner of the Vita Best Actress Award, as well as the Durban Theatre Award for Best Supporting Actress two years running, Vera also won the Vita Award for Best Actress in a Comedy. Last year, she was seen on television in the BBC’s KRAKATOA, and has just completed filming Guy Sclanders’ comedy ESCAPE FROM SHADY PALMS, playing the lead.

Director and support actor Garth Anderson makes a welcome return to the stage after nearly a years’ absence due to serious illness. Now completely recovered, Garth is also no stranger to comedy, having for many years presented the wonderfully over-the-top songs of Noel Coward in OUT IN THE MIDDAY SUN. Garth also won the Vita Award for his comic performance in THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, which he also directed. He is the recipient of the 2006 Fools Awards Smart Lifetime Achievement Award and the National Best Director Vita Award, achieving international success directing Greig Coetzee’s acclaimed WHITE MEN WITH WEAPONS. Later this year Garth will direct Greig’s THE BLUE PERIOD OF MILTON VAN DER SPUY at the Miami Performing Arts Center in the USA.
