This amusing,
nostalgic, musical stroll down memory lane starring Anthony Stonier, celebrates
the melodies and lyrics of Noel Coward and Cole Porter. Despite one being
intrinsically English and the other All-American, they were both the epitome of
style. Their wit and urbanity combined to capture the elegant era they shared.
Both Noel Coward and
Cole Porter are synonymous with a by-gone time. The name Coward puts one in
mind of rapid-fire comedy songs, such as "Mad Dogs and Englishmen"
and "Don’t put your Daughter on the Stage". Porter suggests jazzy
standards and romantic ballads, such as "I’ve got you under my Skin"
and "Everytime we say Goodbye". Few people realise that the two were good friends and in the course of
their separate careers often stepped with ease into each others shoes. Coward,
for example, wrote some beautiful ballads and jazz standards in a style
reminiscent of Porter, "Mad about the Boy" and "Someday I'll
find You", spring to mind. Porter replied with
such amusing songs as "Let’s do it" and "Let’s Misbehave" in a patter song genre, akin to Noel Coward.
Anthony Stonier
returns to the Rhumbelow Theatre in this sparkling new show, in which he
accompanies himself on the piano. (with a little help
from his friends!)
