Showy, flashy, ostentatious, garish, sensational, vivid. These are all words t= hat apply to piano maestro Liberace, the original 'King of Bling' and arguably the most flamboyant entertainer of the century. It is time to shine! Popular pianist Rocco de Villiers pays tribute to the “king of= bling”, the most flamboyant entertainer ever: p= ianist Liberace.

Just before his death 20 years ago in 1987, on February 4 Liberace stated that he wants to be remembered for 3 things : his shows, music and costumes.

See and hear the whole thing: the firs, the rings, the candelabra, t= he thousands of notes, the witty lines and the beautiful tunes. The show is Las Vegas, but also Africa. The show is Liberace, but also Liberocco. =

Music includes the Warsaw Concerto, Rhapsody in Blue, Jealousy Tango= , Moonlight Sonata, Chopsticks, Tango form Scent of a Woman, Don’t cry for me Argentina and many more diamond-draped tunes! Some orig= inal pieces written by Rocco for the show.

Popular pianist Rocco de Villiers has produced a superb script and musical arrangements complimented by direction from the ever professional <= span class=3DSpellE>Tobie Cronje.

I confess. I knew nothing about Liberace before this show. I'm one of those annoying young whipper-snappers who don't know anything about anything and who dismiss that which they know nothing about.=

Hence my reticence to check out Rocco de Villiers' trib= ute to Liberace. I expected garish costumes drenched in sequins, Las Vegas-style kitsch and over-the-top piano playing. What I got was … w= ell … garish costumes drenched in sequins, Las Vegas-style kitsch and over-the-top piano playing. Yes, Liberocco is a retina-scalding monstrosity, but what a fabulous monstrosity it is.

Rocco de Villiers is a consummate entertainer who wins the audience over wi= thin the first five minutes. The greatest triumph of the show is his nimble straddling of the line between satire and tribute. He manages to both take = the piss and be utterly sincere about his material.

De Villiers channels Liberace's flamboyance and showmanship. His comfortable stage presence is a joy to watch.

He peppers his stage banter with bone-dry humour and endearing self-deprecation. Also, and most importantly, he is a mindblowing pianist. His key-work is nimble and assur= ed. He plays standing up, sitting down, with his feet &= #8230;

His costumes are so ugly that they're beautiful.

By the time the last outfit is strewn on the stage, the last note is played= and the last joke is relayed, you're irretrievably engaged in Liberace's world.=
