In 2005 Clare Mortimer and Darren King took what was a short story by Steven Berkoff and made it into a one act play.= From My Point of View contained all the elements of performance the two most enj= oy, and told a story begging to be shared. The play weaves the evocative beauty= and explosive language so true of Berkoff’s w= ork with a physical edge Mortimer and King so longed to explore. The result is fifty minutes of seamless theatre. The performers lea= d the audience through a tale balancing somewhere between heartache and laughter,= all the while playing off the big band that underscores the piece. They prod and cajole, tango, wrestle and seduce, all this while carrying the furniture and sometimes each other! Graha= mstown audiences spoke up, as did the critics, this was excellent theatre.

We are very priveleged to showcase this = piece before it goes off to Grahamstown on the 22 Jul= y. This is the first time that we will be doing theatre in the round at Rhumbe= low, and this will bring the audience close and right into the action of this powerful piece of theatre. Whilst you are encouraged, as per norm= al to picnic, seating will be theatre style and picnic tables will be available outside before the show ONLY.

With = From My Point of View, Clare Mortimer and Darren King have taken a short sto= ry by Steven Berkoff and turned it into their one-= act play, retaining Steven Berkoff's style of heightened physical theatre, of which he was an exponent and for which the term "total theatre" has been coined. Physical theatre it certainly is, the two actors carrying and rearranging the furniture and, indeed, even each other.

The pitiful home life of the forty-year old woman portrayed by Clare Mortimer in which her shrewish mother dominates her father, leading to his being physically and emotionally crippled, results in her frequenting b= ars and dance halls for abundant sexual encounters. However, she has = her standards. It is an unlovable character but it is made poignant by Clare Mortimer's fine performance, ably supported by Darren King. Both are award winners and they display their talents well, fully complementing each other= and working very well together. The big band backing tracks= fit very appropriately to the action and form an integral part of the action.

The audience is taken on a ride between heartache and pathos. = The levels to which one will be driven to escape loneliness and seek companions= hip are superbly illustrated. - M= aurice Kort
